I've been designing web sites for over 10 years now but still find myself as much of a student of design as I have been a teacher to those who have seeked my assistance.
With the emergence of new standards and technologies like AJAX, HTML5, Ruby on Rails and Django, keeping up with the latest tools and trends is almost a full time job.
However, I believe that communicating what you have to say to your readers and visitors is still the most important part of web sites, and it is why I tend towards simple, minimalistic designs that are easily readable and work across all browers and operating systems.
